I think that mainstream media is a joke.
With all of their influence and power, they feed viewers negativity and nonsense, and these audiences devour the mess like it was their last meal. Because of the media’s less-than-pleasant portrayal of minorities (when they actually show them) and lack of truth in reporting – both verbally and visually – I rarely engage in TV or movie viewing these days. However, I tend to watch the news which is the worst of all media sources.
My opinion of the media was really tainted after reading The Media & The Mind: The Black Image in the White Mind by Robert M. Entman and Andrew Rojeck (highly recommended). My already biased opinion about the media along with new knowledge gained from this book forever changed the way I viewed TV shows and movies.
In my mind, no matter how positive TV shows and movies appear on the surface, there are almost always stereotypical or racial undertones. Owners and decision-makers of media outlets keep negative historical experiences alive instead of trying to understand, and then use their powerful influences to attempt to correct some of the dynamics that created the divisions.
Yeah, I know that is ideal, and it may never happen in the real world. Therefore, I started AS NOT SEEN ON TV to create my own reality.
The purpose of my site is to promote positive stories, images, and messages. You’re probably thinking that stories and messages are the same thing. They are not – to me. Stories posted on AS NOT SEEN ON TV are positive in nature and have positive underlying messages. Additionally, truth in relaying positive stories, images, and messages is another goal of this site. One last major goals is to follow up on stories that were previous reported by news media and get missing details and reactions.
So, if you have any positive stories about people, places, organizations and events, this is the source for you.
